Design for Wellbeing

Cambridge Cognition

Cambridge Cognition is a neuroscience digital health company focusing on accurately measuring cognition. They provide brain health assessments, cognitive health tools and technology for clinical trials.

Cognitive assessments are invaluable tools for understanding the role of specific brain functions across a range of disorders and syndromes; giving insight into underlying causes, identifying ways to detect the earliest symptoms and evaluating the effects of interventions designed to improve brain health.

We have been invited by Cambridge Cognition to work on their cognitive testing software called CANTAB. CANTAB is language-independent, culturally neutral, non-invasive and requires no technical knowledge or prior familiarity with computers making them suitable for large, multi-site studies and diverse participant groups.

Our team is applying user-centred design methodology to understand how users are interacting with the test and then using any insights to create a more rewarding and satisfying experience for the user.

Understanding users

Taking iterative memory tests is time consuming and might not provide any rewards. People often do not finish the test. Our focus was on understanding how the tests are run, how people engage in different tests and how we can nudge them to complete and return for more tests. We used user-centred design techniques to observe, log and analyse these interactions. For this, we interviewed internal stakeholders, including scientific teams as well as external participants with different cognitive and health conditions. We designed and developed probes that allowed us to capture data unobtrusively and observe behaviours and habits from a distance. We collected a high volume of fantastic high quality data which gave us deep insight and helped us discover new behavioural patterns.

Scientific Review

Our research team reviewed and analysed existing user studies and other research in human-computer interaction for cognitive testing.

Next steps

Our next steps are focused on an iterative design and evaluation of the system that engages users and brings delight while retaining the accuracy of cognitive testing.
